Baird Davis retired from the Muncie Police Department (Indiana) at the rank of Captain.  His book, The Middletown Myth: Based on True Events, is tale of corruption and conspiracy in Muncie, Indiana.

According to the book description of The Middletown Myth: Based on True Events, “The Middletown Myth brings to life the raw and gritty underbelly of a police department that once was. It has been said that the line between the mind of a criminal and that of a policeman is a very fine line. This story shows a son's dedication to finding what is true in the midst of deception surrounding a profound act of malice toward his father. As he follows the story to its end, he remains true to the sincerity and sense of justice that defined him as a child. In his journey, this son of a city cop finds the answers to long-sought questions. In the end, the line between good and evil becomes more clear, but not without a dozen mysteries being resolved, first.”

According to one reader of The Middletown Myth: Based on True Events, “A fascinating book about real-life corruption and conspiracy in Muncie, Indiana. If you lived in Muncie during the late '60s and '70s and followed local politics and current events, you'll know who many of the characters are in this book even though the names have been changed. The story revolves around Davis' attempt to discover who planted the car bomb that nearly killed his police officer father. His quest takes him on a journey through a small-time world of corrupt politicians, corrupt labor unions, bad cops and greedy businessmen. Add an assortment of prostitutes, hit men and petty thieves and you'll see why Muncie has been nicknamed "Little Chicago.”

About the Muncie Police Department

The Muncie Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency that is organized along traditional American law enforcement standards.  According to the Muncie Police Department, “Uniform Patrol is the backbone of any law enforcement agency.  The goal of the uniform division is to address community problems and assure a safe community through directed and routine patrol.  Being the largest and most visible police presence in our community it is the Uniform Patrol Division’s job to provide primary law enforcement services to the public 24 hours each and every day of the year. They are the first to respond to calls for service throughout the city.

There are three shifts per day.  Each shift is commanded by a lieutenant and has several sergeants to supervise the patrol officers. There are currently 60 patrol officers assigned to the Uniform Division.  The City of Muncie is divided into four districts.  The patrol officers routinely conduct preliminary investigations of crimes, enforce criminal and traffic laws, and promote safety and order in Muncie.  Officers of the Uniform Patrol Division also handle high liability incidents, including crimes in-progress, violent altercations and medical emergencies. These dedicated officers are all graduates of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and have completed field training with an experienced Field Training Officer. We use a variety of specialized units to deliver police services to citizens and visitors of Muncie, including a Traffic Division, K-9 Unit, Dive Team, Crowd Control Unit and Bicycle Patrol.

The Criminal Investigations Division provides the primary investigative service and support to the Muncie Police Department and the community. Our Detectives investigate a variety of complex crimes such as homicide, robbery, and sex crimes, along with burglaries, thefts and fraud cases. Our mission is to investigate these crimes, identify the suspects, and prepare the criminal cases for successful prosecution. The investigators continue to work with the prosecutor's office through the entire trial proceedings.

The Criminal Investigations Division consists of 9 Detectives and three Supervisors. The unit is broken down into the actual Investigations Division and the Evidence Technicians Division. The Investigations Division is supervised by a Captain, A Lieutenant and two Sergeants with experience in every aspect of the department. The Detectives are made up of patrol status officers that have proven themselves as worthy and valuable officers from the Uniform Division. This concept has proven to be an important factor in the Investigations Divisions remarkable success in recent years.

The SMART Unit consists of two Sergeants that investigate all aspects of sexual crimes against children.

The Evidence Technicians Division is made up of three Investigative Technicians. Their responsibilities include the complete and thorough investigation of crime scenes; discovering as well as collecting, processing, preserving, and the presentation of the collected evidence in court. The unit represents the scientific and technical aspects of law enforcement. New investigative tools continue to be developed and these advancements continue to help solve crimes and prosecute the perpetrators.”
