According to the Cortland City Police
Department, it is “a full-service law enforcement agency consisting of full-time, part-time, and reserve police officers.
The department offers 24-hour patrol and citizen complaint response, as well as providing additional services such as vacation
checks, business and citizen programs, fingerprinting, etc. The police department maintains high-quality, professional police
officers who combine formal education with training and experience. These officers, although generalists by requirement, also
maintain many areas of specialization to provide the community with adequate law enforcement techniques needed in the 2000s.
The Cortland Police Department is organized
into the Chief’s Office, the Uniformed Division, Detective Bureau and Records Division. The Uniformed
Division is responsible for: All uniform personnel; Uniform Sergeant's office; Bicycle patrol officers; Communications; STOP
DWI enforcement; Tactical response unit; Records unit; Parking enforcement officers; and, School crossing guards.
The Detective Bureau of the Cortland
Police Department is responsible for Detective Lieutenant - Officer in Charge; Public Information Officer; Criminal investigations;
Investigators; Youth Division; Drug Task Force officer; Evidence custody control; and Lost and found property supervision.
