About Scotland Yard

Scotland Yard or New Scotland Yard, informally known as The Yard or NSY, is the headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police Service, responsible for policing Greater London (excluding the City of London, which is policed by a separate force). The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. It is by far the largest of the police services that operate in greater London (the others include the City of London Police and the British Transport Police). The Royal Parks Constabulary have now become part of the Metropolitan Police Service.

Founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, the original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million.

Today, the Metropolitan Police Service employs 31,000 officers, 14,000 police staff, 414 traffic wardens and 4,000 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) as well as being supported by over 2,500 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary (MSC) and its Employer Supported Policing (ESP) programme. The Metropolitan Police Services covers an area of 620 square miles and a population of 7.2million.

Former Scotland Yard detective Duncan MacLaughlin turned to writing after an eventful police career. He was involved in a number of complex and high-profile cases; including, the investigation of master criminal Kenneth Noye, the pursuit of kidnap victim Stephanie Slater, the murder of Police Constable Keith Blakelock and Operation Emerge.  Operation Emerge was the United Kingdom’s largest cocaine seizure in which one ton of contraband was tracked from South America and seized in London.

In addition to writing, Duncan MacLaughlin is also the owner of the world-wide detective agency – Sáraigh. One of his most popular works is The Filth: The Explosive Inside Story of Scotland Yard's Top Undercover Cop.

According to the book description of The Filth: The Explosive Inside Story of Scotland Yard's Top Undercover Cop, “Duncan MacLaughlin, a senior detective and undercover agent in the Drug Squad and Regional Crime Squad—Britain's equivalent of the FBI—has broken ranks to reveal the stark truth behind the headlines. 40 years-old and a police officer all his life, he is one of the elite. SAS-trained for special missions, his expertise is in surveillance and undercover work that could have got him killed at any moment. The dangerous tightrope he walked included cases involving master criminal Kenneth Noye, kidnap victim Julie Dart, and the slaying of PC Keith Blakelock. He also penetrated international drug cartels and nailed the ruthless barons who control them.”

According to the book description of Dead Lucky: Lord Lucan: The Final Truth, “They called it the manhunt of the century. Following a sensational murder in the heart of Belgravia that shocked high society and gripped the world, a new name was written into criminal folklore: Lord Lucan. In the 30 years since he vanished, numerous books and TV documentaries have theorized on his possible fate. Now former detective Duncan MacLaughlin—dubbed Scotland Yard's top undercover cop—has tracked down the incredible truth.”

According to the book description of The Lucan Conspiracy: How the Establishment Conned the World Into Believing Lord Lucan was Barry Halpin, “They called it the manhunt of the 20th century, one which confounded the world for three decades. Countless theories have been advanced on the fate of Lord Lucan after he vanished following the brutal slaying of his children's nanny. At last, the jigsaw finally fits. Former detective Duncan MacLaughlin, one of Scotland Yard's elite, has cracked the audacious charade which enabled the Earl of Lucan to evade the long arm of the law. MacLaughlin reveals where the aristocrat fled, disguised as Jungle Barry, the name of an uncanny Lucan lookalike he met on the run. Having been hit with a firestorm of propaganda and spurious disinformation from the heart of the Establishment when he revealed these astonishing facts, MacLaughlin launches a convincing counterstrike. Now judge for yourself.”
