About the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office

In 2006, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office consisted of 52 professional staff, 5 lieutenants, 60 deputies, 12 sergeant, 20 senior correctional officers, 6 correctional sergeants, 62 correctional officers and 2 correctional officers.  Additionally, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is commanded by one sheriff, one undersheriff and one captain.

 

The Administrative Bureau is made up of four divisions-Records, Training, Property/Evidence, and Financial Services. The Records Division, under the direction of the Records Supervisor, is the County repository for criminal records, including criminal offender registrations. Records personnel process Deputy reports, maintain the automated Want/Warrant system, and interface with the State Department of Justice to provide to the public with LiveScan Fingerprinting services and access to the Megan's Law database. The Records Division also processes business licenses, gun registrations, and Concealed Carry licenses.

 

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Operations Bureau is made up of seven units under the command of a Sheriff's Captain.  The most visible of these units is Patrol.  These deputies are responsible for responding to emergency calls for service, criminal investigations, and crime prevention through neighborhood and beat patrols.

 

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for all major felony investigations. This division consists of two units: The Detective Bureau and (The Drug Enforcement Unit ( DEU). All of the investigators assigned to this unit are located in the main station and are supervised by a lieutenant.

 

The Detective Bureau consists of a detective sergeant, five detectives, two evidence technicians and a secretary. The detectives investigate major crimes such as child abuse, homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, arson, and other serious felonies.  The Drug Enforcement unit consists of a Sergeant, two deputies, a part-time evidence technician, and a secretary.

 

The Custody Services Bureau is the largest bureau in the Sheriff's Office with 131 full time employees, including 116 Correctional Officers. The Custody Services Bureau’s primary function is the care and custody of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates incarcerated in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF). Located in downtown Eureka adjacent to the County Courthouse, the HCCF spans approximately 155,000 square feet on six floors and has a Board rated capacity of 411 beds. The facility’s kitchen serves over 40,000 meals per year and the commercial size laundry operates 24 hours per day. The county contracts with the California Forensic Medical Group (CFMG) for 24 hour on-site medical and dental care. The facility contains a short-term care medical housing unit accredited by the Institute for Medical Quality. Mental Health and substance abuse treatment services are provided through the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services.

Sergeant Randy Garcia, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department has authored the first children’s book to be added to police-writers.com.  Sergeant Randy Garcia, a 16 year veteran of law enforcement, has published “The Trunk and the Tortoise” which is the first in his planned series, “The Streamer Trunk Adventures.”   

 

The main character Hunter, who is based on Garcia’s son, has just completed the fourth grade and is not looking forward to spending another boring summer hanging around the house. When his grandfather, Captain Mike, sails into town, toting his mysterious steamer trunk, Hunter quickly formulates a plan. He stows away in the trunk, and the two begin an adventurous sailing trip filled with peril and excitement. Unwittingly, they stumble across a nefarious plan to smuggle endangered tortoises from the Galapagos Islands.
