About the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office

One of the largest sheriff’s departments in Minnesota is the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office which has more than 800 personnel.  According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, it “serves more than one million residents across Hennepin County, which includes the urban environment of the county seat in Minneapolis to rural communities in the western part of the county. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Minnesota. Our headquarters are in downtown Minneapolis with division and unit facilities spread throughout the county. The Sheriff's Office operates on a $69 million budget.

Most of the Sheriff's Office duties - from managing the county jail and securing the district court, to patrolling the county's waterways and pursuing and apprehending all felons - are mandated by state law. Other initiatives, from undercover narcotics investigations to homeland security activities, are initiatives the Sheriff's Office engages in "to keep and preserve the peace of the county," the office's broader mandate.

The Sheriff's Office provides comprehensive public safety services across the county. Following are just a few of the services provided by the Sheriff's Office. The Patrol Unit serves as the primary law enforcement agency for the communities of Hassan Township, Greenfield, Medicine Lake and Fort Snelling, as well as the Hennepin County portions of Rockford and Hanover. The unit also provides backup patrol services countywide.

Sheriff's detectives are on-call 24 hours a day to provide investigative services to the Sheriff's Office and any other law enforcement agency that requests assistance with a major crime investigation in the county. The unit handles all criminal investigations for municipalities that do not have their own police departments, as well as for municipalities whose police departments have limited investigative resources. Sheriff's detectives also are frequently called upon by larger municipalities to assist their police departments with homicide and other major crime investigations. The Detective Unit is involved in several partnerships. Sheriff's detectives are assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Minnesota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Hennepin County Attorney's Adult, Juvenile and Gang Prosecution Units.”
