Michael Hughes, “enlisting in the Royal Marines’ elite 40 commando, RM, Hughes, saw active service in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus during the EOKA conflict and, after seven years service, joined the Essex Constabulary.  Another 7 years service in some of the toughest dockside areas of the country were to pass before he transferred to the Metropolitan Police.

There he rose to the rank of Detective Sergeant and helped investigate a multi-million pounds fraud against the Ford Motor Company, as well as several headline-hitting murder investigations, including the sensational gangland executions of Billy Moseley and Michael Cornwall, a case which would attract controversy for almost 30 years.

After his police service, during which time Michael Hughes was commended on many occasions by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioners, and the Chief Constable of Essex Constabulary, Crown Court Judges and Magistrates Courts Benches, he retired to be employed both as a private investigator and then at one of HM Young Offenders institutions.”   Michael Hughes is the author of Judgement Impaired. Law, Disorder and Injustice to Victims in the 21st Century Britain”

One reviewer of Judgement Impaired. Law, Disorder and Injustice to Victims in the 21st Century Britain said, “This book refers in considerable detail to the alleged failure of the 'Labour Government' to deliver the 'election manifesto of 1997 and 2001 on issues of law and order - 'WE WILL BE TOUGH ON CRIME and THE CAUSES OF CRIME'. There are eight hundred and eight pages - twenty four chapters followed by ten pages each with three columns of references supporting the many 'quotes' 'court decisions’. This is a heavy book containing considerable research by the author Michael Hughes in clear terms quoting many reported cases of injustice in the Criminal Justice System in the UK. The author was a dedicated police officer who voices his and other police officers and victims of crime concerns and the feelings of the failure of our courts in dealing with the 'criminal' This publication demonstrates the 'shock' 'horror' 'sleepless nights' and increased fear of crime suffered by the victims of crime.”
