About the Detroit Police Department

The Detroit Police Department is the 10th largest police department in the nation.  It has over 3,700 sworn and civilian employees with an annual operating budget of over $414 million.  The Detroit Police Department is responsible for providing law enforcement service to more than 950,000 residents; over 10,000 businesses; and 258 schools in the city of Detroit, which spans 138.7 square miles.

Dr. Isaiah McKinnon has more than 39 years of experience in the public and private sector, education, law enforcement and private security. Since his retirement as Chief of Police of the Detroit Police Department, he has continued to educate more than 4 million television viewers on Personal Safety on his WDIV-TV program, "Stay Safe With Ike." Additionally, his Motivational, Inspirational, Educational presentations are heard by audiences nationally.

Isaiah McKinnon holds a Doctorate of Philosophy from Michigan State University, a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Detroit, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Mercy College of Detroit. In addition he is a graduate of the FBI Academy in Virginia, and the United States Secret Service Dignitary Protection School in Washington D.C. He is also certified by the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute in Homeland Security at Level 111 (the highest level).

He has written three books: North Between The Houses, a collection of very funny anecdotes collected over thirty years of service; In The Line of Duty, a tribute to fallen.

According to the book description of Stand Tall, “Dr. Isaiah Ike McKinnon served on the Detroit city police force for thirty years. During that time he completely transformed it, developing prevention programs and ensuring justice was served. Through the pain of racism and brutality, Ike rose above it all and in doing so gave back to the city through his hard work and dedication.”

One reader of Stand Tall said, “I recommend this wonderful book for anybody who wants to become a police officer, especially African Americans and other minorities interested in this field. Dr. McKinnon does an excellent job with expressing his feelings about his experiences with the Detroit Police Department, racism, and why it was important for him to join the Detroit Police Department. Dr. McKinnon's book is a true definition of the American dream (especially for minorities) and I guarantee this book will inspire you to follow your dreams regardless of how tough it gets! I've met Dr. McKinnon once and I hope to meet him again so he can autograph my book. Get your copy today!”
