James Plousis is a graduate of Slippery Rock
University in Pennsylvania, Plousis
was a police officer in Ocean City,
NJ, before being elected sheriff of
Cape May County--at age 32. He served
in that post for five terms, earning
national recognition for his
innovative approach to law
enforcement, public safety, and
incarceration.
In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed
Plousis as U.S. marshal for the
District of New Jersey. While in this
position he fought tirelessly to bring
the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Safe
Surrender program to the Garden State
and worked on high-profile cases here
and abroad.
For seven years he was chairman of the New
Jersey Parole Board. In December 2017,
then-Governor Chris Christie named him
to his present assignment as chairman
of the New Jersey Casino Control
Commission.

About the Cape May County Sheriff’s
Office
According to the Cape May County Sheriff’s
Office, "while the basic functions of
the Office of the Sheriff being the
maintenance of law and order, the sale
of property and the overseeing of the
county correction facility, have
remained the same for several hundred
years; many other duties have been
added in response to the need for
service.
The Office of the Sheriff consists of trained
officers and professional civilian
staff. The Law Enforcement Division
has responsibility for court related
duties such as the safety of persons
using and working in the County Court
House, services of court papers,
transportation of jurors, execution of
court ordered sale of property and the
collection of court ordered judgments.
Additional services structured within the Law
Enforcement Division are Child Support
Warrant Service, Crime Prevention Unit
, Victim Assistance Unit, Search and
Rescue/K-9 Unit, Park Unit,
Transportation Unit, I.D. Unit and
other related sub units.
The Correctional Division has the primary
function of the security and
rehabilitation of inmates housed in
the Cape May County Correctional
Facility. Other significant programs
in the Correctional Division are the
Sheriff's Labor Assistance Program,
Electronic Monitoring Program, GED
Program, Religous Services, Bible
study, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics
Anonymous, Anger Management and
Relapse Services, etc.
A new Correctional Center has been
constructed at the same location as
the previous jail and opened for
service on January 14th 2019. The new
Correctional Center incorporates the
latest in correctional center
technology and design and can hold
over 300 inmates."
