Commander Sewards is "a thirty-five veteran of law enforcement. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Sergeant George Sewards, as did his brother, Vernon, and his cousin and brother-in-law, who all served in the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department.

During his career, he drew duty in several bureaus of the Sheriff ’s Department and the Marshal’s Office. He served as a staff instructor at the Rio Hondo Police Academy and was a guest instructor at the LAPD Academy, where he taught a course in civil law enforcement.
While at the Marshal’s Office, Commander Sewards developed and commanded the Judicial Protection Unit ( JPU). This unit was responsible for evaluating threats and providing protection to bench officers. He also trained with the Secret Service presidential protective detail in Glynco, Georgia, during the development of the JPU."

Commander Jay Sewards is the author of A Tradition of Service.

According to the book description of A Tradition of Service, “Buckle up and take a ride through three generations of a family dedicated to serving their country. Chronicling a family's devotion to the military and law enforcement, A Tradition of Service is a glimpse into the lives of those serving in uniform through the second half of the twentieth century. From academy to retirement, Sewards offers a unique perspective from his thirty-five-year career at the Los Angeles County Marshal's Office and Sheriff's Department.”
