About the Orange Police Department
The Orange Police Department serves a community with a present population of
134,500 and covers 24 square miles. The Orange Police Department is authorized for 156 sworn officers. Their 2004 –
2005 budget was for $29 million. The City of Orange is recognized as one of the
safest cities for its size in the nation.
The Orange Police Department has a 60,000 square foot, state-of-the-art technology,
police facility that is near the center of the city. As of 2005, they were
in the process of upgrading their police technology, such as their radio communications, CAD (Computer Automated Dispatch)
and RMS (Records Management Systems).
The Orange Police Department is organized into three division: Field Services;
Investigative Services; and, Administrative Services.
The Investigative Services Division's primary function is to prepare a case
for a successful prosecution by the District Attorney's office in Santa Ana. The Division is commanded by a Captain and is
composed of several units whose primary mission is to investigate crimes and prepare cases for a successful prosecution
The Orange Police Department has assigned the bulk of its 156 sworn officers
and many civilian employees to patrol. Currently, the Division is presently organized with one Captain, four Lieutenants,
twelve Sergeants, eleven Corporals and sixty-five Patrol Officers. There are
several specialized units within the Patrol Division. These are the Gang Unit, Bike Team, The Block, Canine Unit, S.W.A.T./C.N.T.
These specialty units enhance the uniform patrol force's effectiveness to reduce crime and create a safe environment
The Administrative Services Division supports the Patrol and Detective functions
of the Police Department by providing the following services: Personnel and Training; Fiscal Affairs; Homeland Security and
Emergency Services; Internal Affairs; Crime Analysis
Crime Prevention; Records; Volunteer and Chaplain Programs; Alarm Billing;
and, Fleet and Facility Maintenance
Additionally, the Division coordinates the Citizens Police Academy, which is
an 11-week program that is open to community members. Participants receive instruction on a wide variety of law enforcement
related topics. The Academy meets at the Police Department and is taught exclusively by departmental employees.
