About the Seal Beach Police Department
The City of Seal Beach was incorporated on October 25, 1915. The population
was two hundred and fifty people, and there was no concern about crime in this small sea coast village. By November 1915,
however it was determined there should be some person or agency responsible for law enforcement. The City of Huntington Beach
had a Marshal, so a Deputy Marshal was named for Seal Beach on a part-time basis. Within a few years it was apparent that
something more than a Deputy Marshal was needed to control the influx of people, lured by bright lights and gaiety during
the summer months in Seal Beach. Huntington Beach named a Marshal as well as a Deputy for their sister city. In 1927, a local
Marshal and two deputies were selected and they served until the title was changed from Marshal to Police Chief. Since that
time there have been 10 Chiefs of Police. We currently have thirty-seven police officers, sixteen civilian employees, eight
reserve police officers, and forty senior volunteers providing quality service to the City of Seal Beach.
